One brother knows he must\u00a0turn his back on the needs of freedom seekers so that he can get white people to buy his\u00a0shoes and create a successful life for his family. \u00a0 The other brother risks everything in an effort to help fugitive slaves. \u00a0<\/span><em style=\"color: #555555;\">Safe House by Keith Josef Adkins<\/em><span style=\"color: #555555;\">\u00a0is based on the lives of Adkins&#8217; ancestors and originally was commissioned by Atlanta\u2019s Alliance Theatre.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #555555;\">Adkins, who was born in Cincinnati and is a graduate of Princeton High School and Wright State University is a former Duncanson Artist-in-Residence at the Taft Museum of Art. \u00a0 He now lives in New York. \u00a0 His ancesters were from north-central Kentucky and the play is inspired by the\u00a0stories his family handed down and his research of the period.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1422\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hamiltonavenueroadtofreedom.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/7900e3d33358fbc72a3ab3a8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1422\" class=\" wp-image-1422\" src=\"https:\/\/hamiltonavenueroadtofreedom.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/7900e3d33358fbc72a3ab3a8-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"Safehouse\" width=\"254\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hamiltonavenueroadtofreedom.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/7900e3d33358fbc72a3ab3a8-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hamiltonavenueroadtofreedom.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/7900e3d33358fbc72a3ab3a8.jpg 695w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Safehouse<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I saw a preview performance of Safehouse and found it very engrossing. \u00a0It was a new experience to learn about that role of free blacks in harboring and transporting self-emancipators\u00a0 in Kentucky in the early 1840&#8217;s. \u00a0Their story is filled with drama and twists and turns. \u00a0I left feeling great empathy for this family that had free papers, but was far from free.<\/p>\n<p>The playwright chose to have the destination for these freedom seekers be Liberia and used the devise of the aunt recieving a letter from her sister in Liberia to support her helping others to emegrate. The choice between colonization or the radical abolitionist views of the struggle for equal rights within our society was not presented. \u00a0<a title=\"Experience of free Blacks and former slaves in Liberia\" href=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/~paul_s\/www\/liberia.pdf\">(For more information on Liberia:Experience of free slaves and former blacks in Liberia)<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0This could have introduced this topic to audiences with little prior knowledge\u00a0and enriched the onstage dialog within this family.<\/p>\n<p>The world premier of Safe House will run through November 15th \u00a0at the\u00a0<a title=\"Playhouse in the Park\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cincyplay.com\u00a0\">Playhouse in the Park. \u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Diana Porter<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pedigrew family struggles to find its place in the\u00a0antebellum Southern community as free people of color in Kentucky in the 1840&#8217;s.
